Homely cosy old
fashioned boozer with a friendly atmosphere. Red upholstery all around,
nice brick fireplace, pictures of old East London, guest handpump clips above
the bar, beer bottles on a shelf and no fruit machine all add to the relaxing
charm. Near to Brick Lane so you don't have too far to go for a curry, if you
want one. A good underrated pub. Truman Sharking Shark was a reasonable £3.10 a
pint.
John 9/10 visit Sept 2012
A lovely locals' pub with a central
seating area. It’s a squeeze inside but serves great beer and the food looked
home-made and appetising. Walls were full of old photographs of London.
Stuart 9/10 visit Oct 2001
Good atmosphere with the
6 Nations on the TV. London Pride was £3.20 a pint, always reasonable prices
here.
John 8.5/10 visit March 2015
Aptly named pub. As with previous reviews, the prices here are
reasonable, with London Pride £3.70 a pint and ESB at £4.00 a pint, this makes
it cheaper than most Fullers pubs. Friendly barmaid.

A new outlet in an old building.
Presumably an old chemists shop. Full of city drinkers
but welcoming inside. To the left is a large bar with plenty of standing room,
to the right two smaller areas.
Stuart 8/10 visit Oct 2001
Lots of different drinking areas in this
pub including a upstairs area, up the green spiral
staircase at the end of the bar. Borders on the City of London, which means the
pub is closed at the weekend. White seems to be the colour here-it's
everywhere! Nice high ceiling fans and old print on the walls. A pint of Adnams Bitter was £2.90 a pint in September 2009, A pint of
Dark Star Hophead was £3.40 a pint in September 2012.
John 8/10 visit Sept 2012
Still the same, but more dining room than pub now! Only 2 of the 5
handpumps were on, but the Harveys Best Bitter at
£4.00 a pint was good- so it stays in the guide! Closed at the weekends.
John 8/10 visit June 2015

Upmarket riverside pub, whilst some of the
pub is taken up by food there is still plenty of room to drink. Dimly lit with
wooden beams, flagstone floor, pictures of old ships on the walls and a old world feel to the place. Claims to be the oldest
riverside inn in London. History of the pub on the menu. Drinking in the winter
means you can get a seated view of the Thames-unlike the summer. Visited during a Taylor Walker beer festival.. Sharp’s Doombar was
£3.10 a pint on my last visit in January 2011, Portobello Star was £3.39 a pint
in April 2013.
John 8.5/10 visit April 2013
Visited upstairs for the first time this
visit. Beers mainly from regional brewers. Had London Beer Factory London
Sessions which was £3.65 a pint, nice beer.

with 2 dartboards being used by the regulars. Had the brew pub beer (brewery

Nice pub close to the city and Liverpool Street Station. The narrow,
quiet road outside gives the pub a back street local feel.(
My visit was at 1700 hours on a Wednesday). There were 6 real ales on with 5
coming from smaller London breweries. I had a Hackney Fields Love not War at £4.00 a pint. Closed on Sundays and opens 1600
hours on a Saturday.

A small narrow pub which was
busy when I entered; I was lucky to get a seat. There is a back room which
leads on to a beer garden with people eating food in their coats. A good atmosphere
with low lighting, a fire, chandeliers and photos of the old East End on the
wall-the pub has a Krays’ history; the twins bought the pub for their mum.
Three ales are on draught plus a list of Belgian bottled beers on the
blackboard behind the bar. Truman’s Runner is brewed at the moment by the Nethergate brewery, the people who own the name hope to
brew in the East End in the future. The
old Truman brewery was in nearby Brick Lane. The beer was £3.20 a pint In
January 2011. Truman’s proper Job was £3.50 a pint in October 2012. Check the web site for pub opening hours.

Like the pub’s frontage
sign above the door, which is traditional. While inside is more modern, this
back-street local does have a pleasant atmosphere, with friendly bar staff and
flowers in empty beer bottles on the table.
Four handpumps and 11 kegs on draught, all from microbreweries. Had a
Five Points Railway Porter at £3.80 a pint; the rest of the handpump beers were
£4 a pint. Food is just snacks. Nice place.

A good traditional boozer on the Bow Road.
Orange exterior stands out from the road, inside is small with a nice intimate
feel. White rosy wallpaper, Bobby Moore picture and old prize list with Double
Diamond at 7p a pint. Good oldies CD jukebox. Pool table takes a bit of room up
for a small pub. Brains bitter at a very reasonable £1.80 a pint.
John 8.5/10 visit Oct 2005
It’s been a while since I have been here, the pub is still basically the
same. Like the photos of the old East End, and remember the Bobby Moore
picture. In at 12pm the barman poured a few pints of Doombar
( price £3.70 a pint) through first before he served
the beer; a good practise.

with a red ceiling and green seats. The pub has two darts areas, and a large

Small
traditional basic pub with the same landlord for over 50 years on the banks of
the River Lea. A serious drinkers' pub serving some excellent beer in a intimate locals' atmosphere. This pub is not easy to get
to and the surrounding estates are not exactly inviting, but it's worth the
effort. Sadly landlord Leslie Heath died in 2003, but
on my last visit the pub is still has the same décor and the beer still remains
good.
John 8.5/10
visit Jan 2005
Super position
by the river Lea - although the council estate which surrounds it is not
exactly a work of art. The pub can be seen on the Stanstead to Liverpool Street
line. The interior of the pub had a Carol Smiley makeover in 1962 and is pretty
well unchanged. The old gas fire looked dangerous. The locals looked as old as
the Landlord , very friendly and good beer.

the same pub from my last visit. Small pub by the River Lea. Nice painting of

Sister pub to the popular Southampton Arms NW5, with the same format,
lots of beer and cider from micro breweries on handpump and a basic wood décor.
The main difference is the Howling Hops brewery in the cellar. All the three
beers from the brewery were dark and tasty, with the Ruby Red being my
favourite. No TV or fruit machines to distract your drinking. The friendly
barman is happy to tell people about the beers and give samples. There are no
mainstream beers here, as the guy who asked for a pint of John Smith’s Bitter
found out! Most beers were £3.30 a pint.

A genuine Belgian bar in London E8? Well
this must be the nearest to it. A Belgian beer menu which would put a lot of
Belgian bars to shame. The front bar is mainly wooden seats and tables but the
back is very atmospheric, with dimly lit lighting, candles on the tables, and
tablecloths. To the side is a Thai restaurant. A little student/yuppie, but a
great atmosphere when we visited. Busy on my last visit, waited a while for a
seat!
John 9/10 visit June 2012
This is a magic pub. Uncooth

Milton brewery’s only pub in London, now the Oakdale in N4 is closed. The pub
reopened in 2006 lots of floorboards wooden tables and chairs, with the white

Brew pub opened
just before the 2012 Olympics in the most unlikely setting; an industrial
estate in Hackney Wick! (No complaints of noise from the neighbours then!) The
pub is a combination of brew pub beer and pizzas in modern surroundings-which
works. Its big selling point is, its outside drinking area next to the canal,
plus the Olympic Stadium is over the bridge. The open kitchen behind the bar is
where the tasty pizzas come out from and the brewery is to the right as you go
in. The beers were good, especially the Best Bitter. Crate seating means the
pub lives up to its name. Unisex toilets. Worth the effort to find, the pub is 5
minutes walk from Hackney Wick overground station.
The Best Bitter and Golden Ale are £3.50 a pint and the Stout and IPA are £4.00
a pint.

Still a place with a good vibe. Beer is brewed behind the bar, priced at
between £3.80 and £4.50 a pint, on their easy to read beer menu. Good beer and
good pizzas-what a great idea! Interesting to see what happens when West Ham

A small Wetherspoons with a bit of character. The décor is almost Swiss
chalet in style! A good range of real ales are available, Ringwood XXX porter

nearby William IV selling real ale at £2.60 a pint, this is the
place to drink in E10!

One of the earliest Wetherspoons pubs left. This small pub has a large

Unlike most Wetherspoons pubs which are
shop conversions, this is an original pub with a wonderful frontage, with its
etched-glass window showing it off in all its glory. Inside is nice and airly with a lot of light coming in, a big chair and a upstairs galleried area (which is non-smoking). Good pub
with good choice of beer from smaller breweries. Next to Wanstead tube station.
Very different from most Wetherspoons
pubs.

Like most Antic pubs this is a good mix between traditional and new,
with mixed clientele. A big pub with plenty of room to relax in; décor includes
wooden floorboards, white ceiling, bare brick-walls and chandeliers. Had the
Six Nations rugby on the big screen, but the volume turned off. Good choice of
beers on handpump and keg, (Heineken is the only mainstream beer) plus a good
range of bottled beers from UK micros and overseas. Had a Sambrooke

New pub in the brave new world of Canary wharf!
with windows looking out on the dock outside. Red carpets, green walls and
white ceiling in a modern style. Busy with Canary Wharf workers at lunch time,
but service is good. Check for weekend hours as Canary Wharf is a little like
the City of London, death at the weekends! Nice pub sign. Lots of TV screens
about the pub for sporting events. Dartboard by the loos!
John 8/10 visit April 2005
A modern pub, yet modelled in a
traditional style with attractive dark wood furniture, wood railing dividers carved
in intricate designs and many sectioned off areas. Very pretty gilt-edged
paintings with Tudor influence. Indeed, a very 'Tudor' style to this pub. Alas
fake plants! Very attractive metallic-look chandelier lights and pretty green
drapes. Red patterned wallpaper. Very 'rich' decorative style.

A lot has changed housing-wise since I
last visited this area, so much so I was wondering if the pub might still be
there. Pub as good as I remember it, small pub but a nice intimate atmosphere
with lots of wood and small terraced area to drink in-by the river. Upstairs is
a famous seafood restaurant and the bar menu also has a good choice of seafood
as well. Watch out for joggers on the Thames Path after a few beers! On one
visit on a hot day the heating was on! Only in this country! Good painting on
the wall of the local’s in 1949.
John 9/10 visit April 2005
On our last visit in the mid 80's
docklands was a glint in the engineer’s eyes. Lovely riverside pub set amongst
yuppie flats. This was just an ordinary road in those days but now set in a
housing estate. However, this little pub gets better as you walk inside. Long
narrow bar. At the rear is an even narrower staircase to the famous fish
restaurant. At the back of the bar are doors onto a tiny balcony and when we
were there, the river was just 6 inches below the floor on our previous visit
in march 2001! Real fire with a brick hearth - bricks have manufacturers' marks
on them!
Stuart 9.5/10 visit May 2002

Despite the regeneration in this area, not much has changed in
this pub since my first visit in the 1980’s. This might be because the pub is

pub the way it is. A pint of Adnams Bitter was £4.05.

New pub with two different drinking areas,
one with flagstone floor, bar stools and tables. The other is a non-smoking areas with comfy seats with one family room,
which I find a little strange as the pub is full of office workers! Purple

Very modern and posh. We visited during
