N1 ISLINGTON, ANGEL, HOXTON AND KINGS CROSS

Brewhouse and Kitchen, 5 Torrens Street, London EC1V 1NQ.

Owner- Brew pub

Beers- Brewhouse Winter Warmer, Myddleton, Arc Angel, Spandau B, Chaplin, Watchmaker.

Telephone- 020-7837-9421

Web site- http://www.brewhouseandkitchen.com/islington

Good brew pub in a good location, close to Angel station. Whilst in an EC1 postcode, Torren Street is an enclave of EC1 and it is surrounded by Islington postcode N1. Like the décor-lots of wood and different seating including booths, benches and wooden chairs. Beer from the brewing vessels at the back were good, I had a Arc Angel at £3.50 a pint. As well as the brew beers there are good draught and bottled beers from other breweries. Good place to drink. Open weekends.

John 9/10 visit December 2014

A very likeable modern brew pub with wood and copper decor. There are 7 house beers on, I had a pint of Suffragette Ninja at £3.80.

John 9/10 visit January 2016

A nice cosy brew pub with a good atmosphere; never a problem finding a seat here. Had a pint of Brewhouse Winter Warmer at £4.00.

Beers-  Beers- Greene King IPA, Abbot, London Glory, 1870, Sharp’s Doombar.

Telephone-020-7359-0851

Web site http://www.camden-head.co.uk/

Pub close to Camden Passage Antique market, which is well used by the stall holders and their customers. While the décor is traditional, with some nice acid-etched windows bearing the pub's name, and horseshoe bar, it's sometimes noisy with fruit machines and the TV. To be fair most of the regulars don't seem to notice. Nice regular pub to go to. Sharp’s Doombar was £3.60 a pint.

John 8.5/10 visit Sept 2012

The area around this pub suffered a massive sewer pipe burst in December 2016, so it is good to see this pub up and running again. A pint of Greene King Abbot is £4.50.

John 8/10 visit January 2017

Traditional pub with central bar area. Nice atmosphere and down to earth. Full of locals.

Telephone-020-7359-6883

Greene King pub down a quiet back street giving it a almost village-like feel, the busy Highbury corner is only a few minutes walk away. Back room has some nice old brewery pictures on the brown and white walls. Low beamed ceiling with writings about Compton, wooden floors and seats make for relaxing atmosphere. Beer garden around the side. Busy on Arsenal match days. Greene King Abbot was £3.75 a pint..

John 8/10 visit Sept 2012

Down a side road full of Porsche 996! TV screens and a quiet back room. Food looked okay.

Stuart 8.5./10 Oct 2001.

Still the same. Small Greene King back street local with 5 real ales and a good atmosphere. A pint of Old Speckled Hen was £4.30.

This is the Craft Beer Co’s third pub in London. Décor is green walls, red carpet, low lighting and candles on the tables creates a pleasant atmosphere; also there are old portrait paintings and photos of brewery workers on the wall. The real ale on draught is priced on strength, with prices from £3.40 to £4.60 a pint. They are served in lined glasses; I had a pint of Kent Brewery Altered State at £3.70 a pint.  If you look at the bottled beer menu you will find a good choice of micro beers from around the world, but beware-some are very expensive! The non-mainstream policy of the pub for beers is the same with the wines and spirits. Good service from the lone barmaid. Not sure if this place does food or not? Enjoyable visit. Opens 1600 hours Monday to Thursday.

John 9/10 visit May 2013

Still the same. Only 6 of the 10 handpumps are on, but it is just after New Year’s Eve! Blues music in the background of the ‘I woke up in the morning’ variety! A pint of Anarchy hard Times was £4.15.

John 9/10 visit January 2016

Craft chain pub with a good choice of beer and good atmosphere. Music this time is a mixed of reggae, folk and rock. Real ale prices range from £4.15 to £4.65. Had a pint of Gun Project Babylon at £4.35.

When you walk into this pub, there are no handpump clips or labels on the keg pumps to show what they are selling! You need to look at the blackboard which has the information and prices. There are 5 real ales on draught from micro breweries, plus lager and kegs from non-mainstream breweries.  This is a small back street local with an island bar and a beer garden out the back. Behind the bar are some brewing vessels which the pub is hoping to use soon. There is also a good bottled beer menu on the table. Had a pint of Redemption Easy Ryeder at £3.90 a pint.

Web site  http://www.parcelyard.co.uk/

This new pub is next to platform 9 (close to platform 9 and ¾!) at Kings Cross station, up some stairs. Claims to be the largest station pub in the UK; at first this looks doubtful, but then you see there are lots of rooms and alcoves to explore, mainly done out on a railway waiting room theme. Lots of nice touches, I like the white brick wall at the back of the bar. A lot of thought (and money) has got into this pub. Full Fullers range of draught beers, plus 2 Gales beers and 2 guest beers makes it 10 real ales on tap! If you commute from Kings Cross it might be worth missing your train for!  London Pride was £3.75 a pint. Excellent new pub.

John 9/10 visit Sept 2012

Still the same. Beer is expensive, but in good nick. Full Fullers range of beers plus 4 guest beers and  many non-mainstream keg beers including Chimay. London Pride is £4.10 a pint.

Pub just down the road from the Craft Beer Company; while the beer range is not as large, it is well above average with some interesting beers. Only 3 real ales on, but all from micros outside London; I had a pint Stodfold Ruby at £4.00. Décor is bare-brick walls, wooden bench seating and low lighting. Add a friendly barman and some excellent pizzas, and you have a nice pub.

John 8.5/10 visit January 2016

Only 3 real ales, but they got for some interesting breweries. Good beer and pizzas here, as well as heated seats! A pint of Hawkshead Drystone Stout was £4.20.

Telephone-020-7608-3406

Back street local off the City Road. The pub is run by three Camra members so it's traditionally run, with a good choice of beers, as you might expect. Which makes up for the very average décor. The beers are on a blackboard in the corner. New yuppie flats being built outside, not a bad pub to have as your local.  The 5 real ales are priced between £3.20 and £3.70 a pint.

John 8/10 visit July 2012

The pub has had a makeover since my last visit: nothing has changed much; just the pub looks a little smarter. There are 10 real ales to choose from; I had a pint of Redemption Urban Dusk at £4.00.

Duke of Cambridge, 30 St Peter's Street, London N1 8JT A certified organic pub with everything from beer, wine soft drinks and food 100% organic. It has a nice laid-back Belgian café feel to it. The beers from the local Pitfield brewery were good.  A pint of Pitfield Eco Warrior is £4.25. Visited January 2017.

Island Queen, 87 Noel Street, London N1 8HD. An impressive frontage with a curved wood and glass front; inside the place has a lot of character. A pub down a quite back street giving it a almost village like atmosphere. A Mcmullen free house; as well as Mcmullen beers there are other reasonably priced beers, but the Macs beers are the best value with Country at £2.35. Cosy décor, including red carpet, rose wallpaper and old prints and books. A request by the management to not drink directly from bottles and use the glasses provided, probably means they don't get too many younger drinkers!

John 8/10 visit Dec 2005

Nice Mcmullen back-street local, with live football and a dartboard.  The pub also has a beer garden and a Thai menu which is reasonably priced. alongside the Mcmullen Country Bitter at £3.35 a pint.

While this pub has a gastro pub décor, it is a good cross between traditional and modern. There are photos of 1960s female rock singers on the wall, and an old jukebox. Food is unusual, it is chicken on spits which is the main item on the menu. There were 3 real ales on, had a Hackney Golden Ale at £4.10 a pint. The pub does beer festivals. Close to Canonbury overground station. The pub opens at 1600 hours Monday to Friday.

John 8.5/10 visit January 2015

It is Cask Beer Week so the pub has a takeover  from the Redemption brewery, with all 5 beers on handpump coming from this brewery. The pub still has the chicken menu and photos of female rock stars on the wall. Male toilets out of order, so had to use the ladies! A pint of Redemption Fellowship was £4.40. One of a batch of brew pubs which have been opening recently in London. Décor is mainly gastro pub, with white walls, beer memorabilia and dry

hops, but the place has a nice pubby feel to it. The pub’s beers which I try-Calena Red at £3.10 a pint and Golden Mean at £3.00 a pint-were in

good nick. Good to see them serving a beer from another micro brewery (East London Brewing), as well as a good range of authentic draught

and bottled beers from overseas. The friendly barman showed me the brewery, which has 3 brewing vessels in the kitchen!   Toilets are labelled

‘Bulls and Cows’!

Present pub was built in the 18th century and still has a lot of original features. Inside there's snugs, flagstone floor, cosy fireplace and alcoves, outside there's lots of benches to enjoy your beer in the summer and heaters in the winter. Pub has a rural feel to it, and if not too crowded (visit mid-afternoon weekdays) is a great place to unwind. Since my last visit this pub is now owned by Fullers. The pub décor and olde world atmosphere is still the same, which is good news; off the 5 handpumps on the bar, 4 are Fullers beers, including Black Cab Stout which I try for the first time. Also there is a good choice of Belgian and international bottled beers. Fullers have takeover a lot of well known pubs in London recently, due to big pub chain companies getting into debt. The good thing this the pub is in good hands, but it is not so good news for beer choice.

John 9/10 visit Nov 2011

Cosy Fullers pub in the heart of Highgate Village. Always crowded outside even in the winter! Fullers London Pride was £3.95 a pint. Nice place.

Jolly Butchers, 204 Stoke Newington High Street , London, N16 7HU. Pub on the high street with a good range of beers. While the atmosphere was better than my last visit, it is still in the ‘worth a try’ section. A pint of Hammerton N1 was £4.00. visited December 2016.

Nice micro pub, from the ashes of the closed nearby Green Dragon pub. After a petition failed to save the pub, the owner started this pub, with the people on the petition becoming his customers. Good atmosphere at the time of visit. The pub is next to the Green Dragon Lane bus stop. A pint of Ticketybrew Salted Caramel was £3.80. Hours closed Monday; opens 1600 hours Tuesday to Thursday.

Modern airy pub with bare brick walls, white ceiling and wooden floorboards. The pub, whilst done out like a gastro pub has a good atmosphere and friendly staff. There are 6 real ales on ( all priced at £3.90 a pint) and 3 real ciders on the handpumps, I had a pint of Firebrand Minstrel Pale Ale. Sister pub to the Jolly Butchers in Stoke Newington. Small pub with an island bar despite if being small, there are different drinking areas in the pub including a cellar bar. While into its food the pub still has a pubby atmosphere. Lots of old prints and photos around the walls, with no really theme. Live jazz Sunday and Thursday evenings and a pub quiz Tuesday nights. Pub is in a residential area along side a few small shops. Good relaxing sort of pub. Brains Bitter was £3.40 a pint.

Brew dog, 113 Bayham Street, London NW1 0AG. Recently opened in December 2011. No real ale, but come and see what the fuss is all about! Is it good beer or good marketing? Most of the pints were £3.95 at the time of my visit in January 2012. On my visit in December 2016 a pint of Punk IPA was £5.55. Left in to show what a rip off this place is!

The sign outside states there are 14 real ales look at the blackboard before you go in. Small pub in a back street, close to Euston station. Décor is cosy, but non-descript. Not too busy with commuters at the time of my visit. Nine beers are on gravity, which is rare for London. Real ales were £3.50 a pint; there are discounts for Camra members of 50p a pint. I had Orkney Scapa Special.  Now Doric Arch is owned by Fullers, this is the pub for Euston commuters who like micro brews. The range of beers being served are on blackboards all around the pub. Try the cask beer platter. Claims to have the best range of malt whiskies in London

Very busy at 4:30 on  a Saturday afternoon, just about got a seat. Good choice of beers. Had an Isle of Purbeck Bitter which is £3.50 a pint for Camra members and £4 for non-Camra members.

Now with a screen with all the real ales listed, an impressive 18 at the moment! A football free zone during Euro 2016. A pint of Titanic Plum Porter is £4.40 a pint, but £3.90 if you are a Camra member, expensive if you are not a Camra member ! Décor getting a little shabby.

Despite the name it's almost opposite St Pancras station. The good beer guide once called this pub has a 'Fullerspoon', because it is very much like a Wetherspoons pub. This is a good new pub all the same, with some well -kept Fullers beers.  Pub might be closed on a Saturday evening during the football season, being so close to the railway stations. Good to see the full range of Fullers and Gales beers on draught, in central London.  Expensive, Bengal Lancer was £3.90 a pint.

New pub opened in November 2010 in a small square stone building, which looks like Marble Arch! One of the best beer ranges in London, with beers from the hard to find Brew Dog and Thornbridge from the UK and Mahrs from Bamberg and Anchor Steam from the US, to name just a few. There are no mainstream beers here, so it is a beer lover’s delight. The real ale is not served by handpump, but by air pressure. Some of the beers are reasonably priced, some are not-you make your choices! A small place: there is room and comfortable seats upstairs, where the one unisex toilet is! That’s right girls-not only do you have to share, but there is no going to the loo in twos!! A beer mirror with the pubs name on it is above the bar. The food is outside pizza. Nice place, but I wonder if it’s so nice on a busy Friday and Saturday night! Dark star Espresso Stout was £3.10 a pint.

John 9/10 visit January 2012

Lots of people drinking outside today, so the upstairs seating( not easy going up the spiral stairs with a pint!) is empty. Well served pint of Tiny Rebel Cwtch at £3.60 a pint.

The first pub in the tap chain. Never had a bad pint in any of their pubs and the prices for  their real ales, (Five Points Railway Porter at £3.60 a pint) are good for central London. Overflow beer garden needed for this small pub.

Seating around the edge of the pub leaves not too much room in this place. Lots of pictures of Cricket and Rugby teams and players. Which means there's a big sporting following when the TV turns on to sporting events, but it doesn't dominate the pub. A good pint of Pride here, but had a Cheddar Ales Hop and Glory at £3.60 a pint . Good atmosphere here. Seats outside in the summer.

Pubs often reflect their surrounding areas. This pub is a traditional Hampstead local, a favourite with the Hampstead's rich arty crowd who like a pint in a traditional pub. Unspoilt public bar (rare for the area ), lounge with nice pictures as you go in, wood panelling and acid-etched glass all make this a great pub with a lot of character. A restaurant at the back seems to be under-used by drinkers. Good friendly atmosphere. Sambrook’s Wandle Ale was £3.50 a pint.

John 9/10 visit Aug 2012

Our visit started with a duff pint of Winter Warmer which they gladly exchanged. Orangey-reddy wall paper and green velvet seats. Reasonable food and a yuppy restaurant at the back. The public bar is intact and you could imagine the local artists downing a pint or two here.

Stuart 8/10 visit March 2001

First time in the public bar part of the pub; not much different from the saloon, but at least they have not knocked the wall through! Nice photos of old Hampstead. Had a Sambrooke Wandle at £4.05 a pint.

A impressive pub with a good range of beers, including a Cologne klosch on draught. The range is a little similar to The Washington NW3. The interior is traditional with some nice wood panelling but the furniture is new. including lots of comfy sofas all round the pub. Impressive beer garden which is large for inner London. It reminds me a little of a German beer garden. Pub is a little into its food, but there are lots of people drinking. A little of the Hampstead track. Good name for a pub near the Heath. Nice find. Wonderful traditional old pub with a warren of rooms to drink in, including the Tavern bar, the Coffee bar and a nice room at the back near the toilets. Relaxing and peaceful pub with bare floorboards, jazz background music and smoke-stained walls; place is a little like a Amsterdam brown café. A pub of great character; worth the trip up the steps to get there. A pint of London Pride was £3.75.

Marvellous Victorian pub with a lot of its original fittings still remaining, including the tiling at the side entrance, acid-etched windows and mirrors. While the shell the same, the décor is now modern, including lots of leather sofas. Beer range down to two real ales, but in good condition. No standard lagers, only the ones listed above, which is a fair range. Prices are on a blackboard above the bar.

The sign on the outside says Real ale and Cider House, and it does what it says on the tin! With 10 real ales and 6 real ciders from small independent breweries, at reasonable prices for London (£2.90 a pint for real ale and £3.20 a pint for cider) this cracking place is a beer lovers’ (and tickers’) dream! With the lager from the local Camden Town everything comes from a small brewery. The pub décor is small and narrow, with a titled wall behind the bar and lots of old wood, white walls, and brewery mirrors. The décor and atmosphere reminds me of a Dutch brown café. Some nice individual touches including no TV, no fruit machine, only real money, piano nights on Wednesday and old record turntable at the bar with vinyl records, but mainly the pub is all about good beer. There is a small beer garden at the back. Lots of people would give their right arms to have a local like this!  This pub goes straight into my top ten pubs in London.

John 9.5/10 October 2010

A unique place which is a Czech pub/club in a detached house. Started by Czech exiles after World War 2, now open to all. The bar is off to the left as you walk in; it is small with a wood panelled wall and maps of the Czech and Slovak republics on the wall. Out back is a large beer garden, perfect for a summer’s day. All of the Czech beers on draught here can be found elsewhere in London, which is a little disappointing as I was hoping for some beers from smaller Czech breweries. The food menu is traditional Czech; great if you like dumplings. Budvar was a reasonable £3.00 a pint, but it is £2.00 for a half pint! The beer was in good nick. Close to all the West Hampstead stations! Closed on Mondays, opens 1700 hours Tuesday to Friday and opens 1200 hours Saturday and Sundays.  A different sort of place from most pubs in this guide.

Visited this pub once at 19-30 on a Thursday night and it was very crowded; reasonable beer prices, and the pub's curry evening might have something to do with it! Usual Wetherspoon décor, some nice posters of the original houses built here in the 1930s. Not a Wetherspoon which is in the town centre, but there are lots of takeaways near this pub. The friendly staff and locals make this pub a good place to visit. This part of London deserves a good pub. Guest beers are £2.09 a pint.

One of things I like about Wetherspoons is not only is there a good range of beers at good prices, but also their pubs are sometimes  the only decent pubs in some under- pubbed parts of London! This pub is a good example. Good mix of clientele who create a good atmosphere. Good section of guest ales; try Steve’s choice! Guest beers are £2.35 a pint.

Footnote.

Close to Rayners Lane tube station. There are a lot of Wetherspoons pubs close to tube stations on the Met Line from Harrow-on –the Hill to Uxbridge; makes for a good pub crawl.
