Pride Of Spitalfields, 3 Heneage Street, London E1 5LJ

Owner- Free House

Beers- Fullers London Pride, ESB, Couch Vale Brewers Gold, Truman Scorcher, Sharp’s Doombar.

Telephone-020-7247-8933

Homely cosy old fashioned boozer with a friendly atmosphere. Red upholstery all around, nice brick fireplace, pictures of old East London, guest handpump clips above the bar, beer bottles on a shelf and no fruit machine all add to the relaxing charm. Near to Brick Lane so you don't have too far to go for a curry, if you want one. A good underrated pub. Truman Sharking Shark was a reasonable £3.10 a pint.

John 9/10 visit Sept 2012

A lovely locals' pub with a central seating area. It’s a squeeze inside but serves great beer and the food looked home-made and appetising. Walls were full of old photographs of London.

Stuart 9/10 visit Oct 2001

Good atmosphere with the 6 Nations on the TV. London Pride was £3.20 a pint, always reasonable prices here.

John 8.5/10 visit March 2015

Aptly named pub. As with previous reviews, the prices here are reasonable, with London Pride £3.70 a pint and ESB at £4.00 a pint, this makes it cheaper than most Fullers pubs. Friendly barmaid.

A new outlet in an old building. Presumably an old chemists shop. Full of city drinkers but welcoming inside. To the left is a large bar with plenty of standing room, to the right two smaller areas.

Stuart 8/10 visit Oct 2001

Lots of different drinking areas in this pub including a upstairs area, up the green spiral staircase at the end of the bar. Borders on the City of London, which means the pub is closed at the weekend. White seems to be the colour here-it's everywhere! Nice high ceiling fans and old print on the walls. A pint of Adnams Bitter was £2.90 a pint in September 2009, A pint of Dark Star Hophead was £3.40 a pint in September 2012.

John 8/10 visit Sept 2012

Still the same, but more dining room than pub now! Only 2 of the 5 handpumps were on, but the Harveys Best Bitter at £4.00 a pint was good- so it stays in the guide! Closed at the weekends.

John 8/10 visit June 2015

Still the same. Nice warm place on a cold winter’s day. A pint of Elgood Black Dog is £4.50.

Upmarket riverside pub, whilst some of the pub is taken up by food there is still plenty of room to drink. Dimly lit with wooden beams, flagstone floor, pictures of old ships on the walls and a old world feel to the place. Claims to be the oldest riverside inn in London. History of the pub on the menu. Drinking in the winter means you can get a seated view of the Thames-unlike the summer.  Visited during a Taylor Walker beer festival.. Sharp’s Doombar was £3.10 a pint on my last visit in January 2011, Portobello Star was £3.39 a pint in April 2013.

John 8.5/10 visit April 2013

Visited upstairs for the first time this visit. Beers mainly from regional brewers. Had London Beer Factory London Sessions which was £3.65 a pint, nice beer.

John 9/10 visit November 2014

Still a classic riverside pub. Good to see the pub supporting London micro-breweries. A pint of Hop Stuff  Fusilier was £4.00.

Nice pub close to the city and Liverpool Street Station. The narrow, quiet road outside gives the pub a back street local feel.( My visit was at 1700 hours on a Wednesday). There were 6 real ales on with 5 coming from smaller London breweries. I had a Hackney Fields Love not War at £4.00 a pint. Closed on Sundays and opens 1600 hours on a Saturday.

John 8.5/10 visit November 2014

Some interesting beers on draught, staff will offer samples. Had a By The Horns Hopslinger at £4 a pint.

John 8.5/10 visit March 2015

Atmospheric city pub, which is not too crowded on a Saturday afternoon. Like the bare brick walls and low lighting. A pint of Harveys Mild is £4.30.

Turners Old Star, 14 Watts Road, London E1W 2QG. One of the last traditional pubs in the East End. Small pub in a wood carved bar, pool, live sports and a good atmosphere. The pub has Turner connections. Only 2 real ales; a pint of London Pride was a reasonable £3.70. Visited February 2017.

A small narrow pub which was busy when I entered; I was lucky to get a seat. There is a back room which leads on to a beer garden with people eating food in their coats. A good atmosphere with low lighting, a fire, chandeliers and photos of the old East End on the wall-the pub has a Krays’ history; the twins bought the pub for their mum. Three ales are on draught plus a list of Belgian bottled beers on the blackboard behind the bar. Truman’s Runner is brewed at the moment by the Nethergate brewery, the people who own the name hope to brew in the East End in the future. The old Truman brewery was in nearby Brick Lane. The beer was £3.20 a pint In January 2011. Truman’s proper Job was £3.50 a pint in October 2012.  Check the web site for pub opening hours.

John 8.5/10 visit October 2012

Still the same. Nice atmosphere, usually visit on a Sunday when it is hard to find a seat, but not today. Good pint of Adnams Oyster Stout at £4 a pint.

John 9/10 visit March 2015

Still the same. There are 3 real ales on tap, the choice of bottled beers seems to have dropped off since my last visit. A pint of Timothy Taylor Landlord is £4.50. Notice ukulele shop opposite the pub; have not seen that before!

Like the pub’s frontage sign above the door, which is traditional. While inside is more modern, this back-street local does have a pleasant atmosphere, with friendly bar staff and flowers in empty beer bottles on the table.  Four handpumps and 11 kegs on draught, all from microbreweries. Had a Five Points Railway Porter at £3.80 a pint; the rest of the handpump beers were £4 a pint. Food is just snacks. Nice place.

John 9/10 visit March 2015

Kings Arms E2

Pub with one of the most interesting draught beer ranges in London. On cask was a beer ( Rebirth) which was jointly brewed by Fullers and Moor, on keg there was Mikkeller Saaart at 9%, at £3.40 for a third of a pint and 6 Degrees North Whiskey Sour at 7%, at £3.50 for half pint. Atmospheric place, with candles on the tables and flowers in bottles. Friendly and helpful bar staff.

A good traditional boozer on the Bow Road. Orange exterior stands out from the road, inside is small with a nice intimate feel. White rosy wallpaper, Bobby Moore picture and old prize list with Double Diamond at 7p a pint. Good oldies CD jukebox. Pool table takes a bit of room up for a small pub. Brains bitter at a very reasonable £1.80 a pint.

John 8.5/10 visit Oct 2005

It’s been a while since I have been here, the pub is still basically the same. Like the photos of the old East End, and remember the Bobby Moore picture. In at 12pm the barman poured a few pints of Doombar ( price £3.70 a pint) through first before he served the beer; a good practise.

John 8/10 visit January 2015

Good unchanged East End boozer on the Bow Road. Cask Marque accredited.  A pint of London Pride was £4.00.

A nice back-street local with nice décor and atmosphere, just off the busy Bow Road. The walls are cream and yellow, with a red ceiling and green seats. The pub has two darts areas, and a large sports screen with the sound low. Cosy pub with lots of different areas you can drink in. First time I have tried Burton strong Ale, good beer.

John 8.5/10 visit Oct 2005

Loads of seating with a food area at the rear. Real flowers as well on the table.

Stuart 8/10 visit April 2002

Still the same. Nice comfortable pub with different drinking areas including a dartboard. Young’s Special was £3.57 a pint and tasted good!

John 8/10 visit January 2015

More of a gastro pub than my last visit, which might explain the prices. A ( good) pint of Young’s Special was £4.45, See the price from my previous visit and see much it’s gone up in two and half years!

John 8/10 visit August 2017

Small traditional basic pub with the same landlord for over 50 years on the banks of the River Lea. A serious drinkers' pub serving some excellent beer in a intimate locals' atmosphere. This pub is not easy to get to and the surrounding estates are not exactly inviting, but it's worth the effort. Sadly landlord Leslie Heath died in 2003, but on my last visit the pub is still has the same décor and the beer still remains good.

John 8.5/10 visit Jan 2005

Super position by the river Lea - although the council estate which surrounds it is not exactly a work of art. The pub can be seen on the Stanstead to Liverpool Street line. The interior of the pub had a Carol Smiley makeover in 1962 and is pretty well unchanged. The old gas fire looked dangerous. The locals looked as old as the Landlord , very friendly and good beer.

Stuart 8.5/10 visit April 2002

Still very much the same pub from my last visit. Small pub by the River Lea. Nice painting of former landlord Les Heath, (see previous review) at the back of the pub. Open Monday to Thursday at 1300 hours. A pint of London Pride was £3.60.

John 8.5/10 visit May 2015

Small basic pub by the River Lea. More of a summer pub than a winter pub. Painting of Leslie Heath is no longer there. ( see previous review) A pint of London Pride was £3.90.

Large pub close to Clapton Overground station. Nice décor in an understated way, with wood panelled walls, black and white decked floor and some leather sofas. Reggae Ska is the background music. Spacious beer garden at the back, which must be nice in good weather (it is raining today!). There are 5 real ales on draught plus various craft beers on keg and in bottles. Good place to chill out in, with friendly  bar staff. I had a pint of Truman Runner at £3.90 a pint. Opens at 1600 hours, Monday to Thursday.

John 9/10 visit May 2015

My previous review stated this pub was a nice place to chill out in;  but not today-the 6 Nations rugby is on! All 4 handpumps are from East London micros. The beer garden was once the car park. A pint of Five Points APA was £4.00. Nice pub, friendly staff despite being busy.

Visit May 2015.On February 2018 I revisit, pub still the same. A pint of Siren Flagship Pale Ale was £4.20.

Sister pub to the popular Southampton Arms NW5, with the same format, lots of beer and cider from micro breweries on handpump and a basic wood décor. The main difference is the Howling Hops brewery in the cellar. All the three beers from the brewery were dark and tasty, with the Ruby Red being my favourite. No TV or fruit machines to distract your drinking. The friendly barman is happy to tell people about the beers and give samples. There are no mainstream beers here, as the guy who asked for a pint of John Smith’s Bitter found out! Most beers were £3.30 a pint.

John 8.5/10 visit Nov 2012

The brewery has moved to Hackney Wick ( see E9 entry), but there is a small brewery in the cellar still brewing for this pub. Décor is still the same from my last visit, with no TV or fruit machine. Good range of beers here, with  a pint of Howling Hops Porter at £4.20.

John 9/10 visit Oct 2016

Great pub, good choice of beer, friendly barman. A pint of Moor Beer Raw at £4.20 was good.

A genuine Belgian bar in London E8? Well this must be the nearest to it. A Belgian beer menu which would put a lot of Belgian bars to shame. The front bar is mainly wooden seats and tables but the back is very atmospheric, with dimly lit lighting, candles on the tables, and tablecloths. To the side is a Thai restaurant. A little student/yuppie, but a great atmosphere when we visited. Busy on my last visit, waited a while for a seat!

John 9/10 visit June 2012

This is a magic pub. Uncooth -with loads of Belgian beers. Front seating area with a dark and smoky section to the rear. Found a wet seat but suffered with a bottle of Orval. 100 beers on the menu. Candles illuminate the place.

Stuart 9.5/10 visit Aug 2001

London’s original Belgian beer café, and l like a good Belgian beer café the décor has not changed much over the years. Belgian bottled beers are reasonably priced for the area. Half pint of Westmalle Dubbel  was £3.50 and a pint of Landlord was £3.95.

John 9/10 visit Oct 2016

Still the original Belgian pub in London. Real ales have increased from 3 to 6. Had a pint of Timothy Taylor Landlord at £4.20. Busy at the front, but not at the back.

This is the Milton brewery’s only pub in London, now the Oakdale in N4 is closed. The pub reopened in 2006 lots of floorboards wooden tables and chairs, with the white wall and paintings it reminds a little of a upmarket German pub. Pool table seems out of place here. Excellent choice of beer, for us beer lovers. No mainstream beers here at the moment. Pub was non-smoking before the July 2007 smoking ban. The pub has pizzas all day. Dark star American Pale Ale was £3.20 a pint.

John visit 9/10 June 2012

A little outside trendy Mare Street and Broadway Market, so prices are more reasonable. My pint of Milton Pegasus was £3.70. Good bar service here today. Pub is close to Hackney Downs overground station, which is well served by trains going to Liverpool Street Station.

John 8/10 visit Oct 2016

This pub has been recently taken over by the nearby Five Points brewery from the Milton brewery. Decor is still the same, at the moment. Three of the eight handpumps are from Five Points. Had a pint of Five Points Railway Porter at £4.10.

Brew pub opened just before the 2012 Olympics in the most unlikely setting; an industrial estate in Hackney Wick! (No complaints of noise from the neighbours then!) The pub is a combination of brew pub beer and pizzas in modern surroundings-which works. Its big selling point is, its outside drinking area next to the canal, plus the Olympic Stadium is over the bridge. The open kitchen behind the bar is where the tasty pizzas come out from and the brewery is to the right as you go in. The beers were good, especially the Best Bitter. Crate seating means the pub lives up to its name. Unisex toilets. Worth the effort to find, the pub is 5 minutes walk from Hackney Wick overground station. The Best Bitter and Golden Ale are £3.50 a pint and the Stout and IPA are £4.00 a pint.

John 9/10 visit Nov 2012

Still a place with a good vibe. Beer is brewed behind the bar, priced at between £3.80 and £4.50 a pint, on their easy to read beer menu. Good beer and good pizzas-what a great idea! Interesting to see what happens when West Ham moves into the nearby Olympic Station. No longer crate seating, it is now benches!

John 9/10 visit January 2015

Crowded on my visit on a bank holiday Sunday. It was three deep at the bar,  but I got served fairly quickly. Will be interesting to see if it is this busy when West Ham start playing at the Olympic  Stadium(only a 5 minute walk). Most people are drinking by the canal. A pint of Crate Porter was £4.10.

John 9/10 visit May 2016

The pub has been extended since my last visit. Only 1 of the 4 handpumps are from the brewery, but most of the keg taps are. Outside drinking always popular here. Grate Porter was £4.60 a pint.

From the outside this place doesn’t look like a pub, just a red brick building! Inside has a nice marble floor and an almost gothic theme! Lots of different rooms. Good choice of beers, mainly from smaller breweries. Busy on Leyton Orient match days. Portobello Market Porter was £3.70 a pint.

Unlike most Wetherspoons pubs which are shop conversions, this is an original pub with a wonderful frontage, with its etched-glass window showing it off in all its glory. Inside is nice and airly with a lot of light coming in, a big chair and a upstairs galleried area (which is non-smoking). Good pub with good choice of beer from smaller breweries. Next to Wanstead tube station.  Very different from most Wetherspoons pubs.

John 9/10 visit Sept 2004

Still the same. A lovely old Victorian gin palace. You can’t miss this pub, if you’re coming out of Wanstead station. Had a Hop Stuff Fusilier at £2.45 a pint. Good bar service.

John 9/10 visit February 2015

Large Edwardian pub, which wisely Wetherspoons have left mainly untouched. With 12 real ales on draught as well, this is one of the best Wetherspoons pubs in London. A pint of ELB Brakeman was £2.19.

Nice back street local, while this pub is in  the E11 postcode (Leytonstone) it is closer to Leyton tube station and Leyton Orient’s ground. Good commitment to local breweries, with all 4 beers on handpump coming from East London micros. This likeable pub has events throughout the week, plus a nice beer garden. The food here is pizzas served by friendly staff. The pubs opens 14:00 hours Monday to Thursday.

A nice cosy pub in a conservation area just off the busy Leytonstone High Road, which gives this pub a 'village feel' to it. Interesting railway memorabilia on the wall, as well as a Bass brewery mirror and a ceiling fan for hot summer’s days. Walls look a little old, but it gives the pub a lived-in feel. Beer garden at the rear and small public bar at the front! Leytonstone station is the nearest tube stop.

Like most Antic pubs this is a good mix between traditional and new, with mixed clientele. A big pub with plenty of room to relax in; décor includes wooden floorboards, white ceiling, bare brick-walls and chandeliers. Had the Six Nations rugby on the big screen, but the volume turned off. Good choice of beers on handpump and keg, (Heineken is the only mainstream beer) plus a good range of bottled beers from UK micros and overseas.  Had a Sambrooke Junction at £3.80 a pint. Friendly bar staff.

John 9/10 visit February 2015

Nice laid back Bohemian atmosphere for a high street pub. The pub has got a lot of rare ‘outside of London’ real ales. A pint of Siren Brew Liquid Mistress was £4.15. This Antic pub is open all day during the week, unlike a lot of their other pubs. Friendly staff.

New pub in the brave new world of Canary wharf! with windows looking out on the dock outside. Red carpets, green walls and white ceiling in a modern style. Busy with Canary Wharf workers at lunch time, but service is good. Check for weekend hours as Canary Wharf is a little like the City of London, death at the weekends! Nice pub sign. Lots of TV screens about the pub for sporting events. Dartboard by the loos!

John 8/10 visit April 2005

A modern pub, yet modelled in a traditional style with attractive dark wood furniture, wood railing dividers carved in intricate designs and many sectioned off areas. Very pretty gilt-edged paintings with Tudor influence. Indeed, a very 'Tudor' style to this pub. Alas fake plants! Very attractive metallic-look chandelier lights and pretty green drapes. Red patterned wallpaper. Very 'rich' decorative style.

Sue 8.5/10 visit March 1993

East India Quay - A recent addition to the Fullers Chain. More up market than the Tollebury and more expensive. Lively atmosphere with wooden floors and a nice quay frontage. You feel they could have made more of the place. 3 beers on tap.

Stuart 7.5/10 visit May 2002

Fullers pub pretty much as I remember it, still with the dartboard by the loos! Not busy for a Saturday afternoon (best time to visit), with 3 sports screens showing football with the volume turned down. There is a drinking area outside by the dock.  There are 3 Fullers beers on draught, plus 2 guest beers from Dark Star. I had a pint of London Pride at £3.99 a pint.

John 8.5/10 visit May 2015

Former the Cat and Canary, this pub is now part of Fullers craft beer chain, The Merchant. Gone are the TVs and the dartboard, in are the hip bar and indie music. The beer range is good and the pub is not unpleasant. A pint of London Pride was £4.60.

A lot has changed housing-wise since I last visited this area, so much so I was wondering if the pub might still be there. Pub as good as I remember it, small pub but a nice intimate atmosphere with lots of wood and small terraced area to drink in-by the river. Upstairs is a famous seafood restaurant and the bar menu also has a good choice of seafood as well. Watch out for joggers on the Thames Path after a few beers! On one visit on a hot day the heating was on! Only in this country! Good painting on the wall of the local’s in 1949.

John 9/10 visit April 2005

On our last visit in the mid 80's docklands was a glint in the engineer’s eyes. Lovely riverside pub set amongst yuppie flats. This was just an ordinary road in those days but now set in a housing estate. However, this little pub gets better as you walk inside. Long narrow bar. At the rear is an even narrower staircase to the famous fish restaurant. At the back of the bar are doors onto a tiny balcony and when we were there, the river was just 6 inches below the floor on our previous visit in march 2001! Real fire with a brick hearth - bricks have manufacturers' marks on them!

Stuart 9.5/10 visit May 2002

Long time, no visit. Still a good pub, with a same range of beers. Marston Pedigree was £4.00 a pint.

John 9/10 visit November 2014.

Despite the regeneration  in this area, not much has changed in this pub since my first visit in the 1980’s. This might be because the pub is co-own by actor Ian Mckellen, who wants to keep the pub the way it is. A pint of Adnams Bitter was £4.05.

New pub with two different drinking areas, one with flagstone floor, bar stools and tables. The other is a non-smoking areas with comfy seats with one family room, which I find a little strange as the pub is full of office workers! Purple lighting above the bar and a big choice of champagne, but no longer has a bottle for one at £5-99! The toilets have won awards. Good pub for Docklands!

John 9/10 visit April 2005

Very modern and posh. We visited during the jubilee beer festival - great range of beers on tap. You must visit the toilets - nouveau riche! The drinking area has stone floors in this old Harbour Master's building. We sat in the purple children's room - very appropriate.

Stuart 8/10 visit May 2002

While a Lloyds No 1, this Wetherspoons pub has a good choice of real ale, with 14 of the 15 handpumps serving real ale. I had a Nethergate Mary’s Ruby Mild at £2.60 a pint. Nice plush surroundings! Good atmosphere, good pint.

Most of the original features are still here , like the marble floor, arches and mirrors, which makes for a grand décor feel. I am not sure how old this pub is? It does look a bit like a shop conversion, but it does live up to its name, with a village type atmosphere. Green walls with old photos and prints. Pub was crowded at the time of visit, with a lively feel to it. Only a small TV for the horse racing.

Aptly named pub still with a nice cosy atmosphere. Food seems to be popular here, but it has not taken over the pub. There were 3 real ales on draught,  I had a pint of Adnams Bitter at £3.55 a pint.
