PADSTOW

Since Rick Stein was discovered by the BBC this place has gone all posh.  Talking of which, she and Becks have a house across the camel in Rock.  Although Ricks seafood restaurant does nice food he does not do real ale.  So I’ve come up with a few outlets to try!

A nice pub in the town, whilst it goes for the tourist market it manages to keep a lot of its charm.  A nice pub to spend an evening in. Standard red and black St Austells decor, low lighting adds to the atmosphere.  John 8/10

Very attractive bar area, sectioned into areas including nice pool table area and "town bar". Pretty deep red furnishing with a nice mirror that reflects the red glow of the light. Collection of military decorations above the bar. Another large pub where I would feel happy sitting in any part of it.  Sue Aug 97

One of the  first pubs I visted in Cornwall and its still a very nice place. A good mix of new and old  with lots of separate places to drink in. Pub was crowded , but a nice cosy atmosphere.  John 8/10

A very pretty pub with lovely flower baskets outside and a lovely mural on the wall of the ships in the harbour. Old decorations blended with the new in a pleasant way. Very pretty bar area with iron scrollwork dividers between the areas, Friendly bar staff. Nice cosy atmosphere though a little obtrusive.  Sue Aug 97

Its always busy here Saturday night but a nice atmosphere attracts the punters.  Situated right by the harbour it was originally the customs and excise house.  Stu 7/10

An upmarket hotel bar with views out to the harbour if you sit by the right window. Relaxing sort of place, with nice decor. A lot better than most hotel bars. Staying at the hotel costs a small fortune, try the B&B next door its a nice place.  John 7.5/10

A large hotel with spacious rooms divided into separate areas. Pine furniture with green and cream colour theme in the fitting. I Liked the suitcases and trunks above the bar! Also the green leather settee and chairs. Not so keen on the piped music, but very nice overall.  Sue Aug 97

This is a Guinness book of records pub – I will tell you why later.  A hotel with a super bar serving 3 real ales.  Plenty of space with a conservatory at the rear.  When I visited last we went with some friends and 4 children.  One of them tried to reconstitute a pasty on the carpet – one of the biggest chunders I’ve seen!  The staff were understanding and after 3 tea towels we managed to stem the tide J The people on the next table finished their meal early ? Fairly large pub which was just very average, nothing really sticks in my mind about this place. Mind you we were doing a pub crawl of Padstow which might explain why.  John 6/10

Wood interior with a family room to the rear.  I had the HSD which was in fine condition.  Stu 7/10 May 2002

The first badly rated pub of the day.  Ladies beware the female bar staff are more interested in flirting with male customers than serving! Long bar area not particularly nice and dimly lit. Small side bar quite pleasant, but not happy with the atmosphere.  Sue Aug 97

PAR

It’s a bit industrialised around here with the China Clay industry nearby, now owned by Imerys, a French Company.  Par has docking facilities for large ships as well.  Because of this some of the pubs used to offer more than beer and food!

On my visit before last the landlord was pissed out of his brain.  Locals were in the same state. HSD came out of a dubious looking spout sticking out of the wall? This once had a reputation for having a few ‘loose women’ around.  (Good job we did not tell Sue!) The last visit was better.  Stu 6/10 Sept 97

Small friendly pub with a locals feel to the place. Collection of plates around the place. Average sort of place, can't say anything for it or against it.  John 7/10 Sept 97

Pub in the centre of village, with photos of mining and beer garden. A little like the other pub in the village (Radjel inn), but to be fair to the brewery they have spent some money on it, but it is still a little bland.

A member of my family once ran this pub.  Situated at the top of the town near the Town Hall on a one way system, its  a real drinkers local.  Two main bar areas with a loungey feel.  When we visited last time Sue was admiring a nice little kitten.  Stu 7/10  1998

Pub in a row of terrace houses. Dimly lit with a nice 'ole world' feel to it, I am not sure how old the pub is but it seems genuinely old. Not to many people around when we were in, but a pleasant atmosphere and a friendly landlord.  John 8/10 Nov 98

I like this little village by the sea, next to Mevagissey and I have been here many times.  There is a lot of holiday accommodation and a beach nearby, so in the Summer it can get packed. Outside is a narrow sitting area on the road as well as a beer garden opposite. You pass through a lively little bar with a pool room, as you enter, but turn to the left to reach a bigger second bar/restaurant.  Beer is always in good condition; well it’s not that far from the brewery!  Friendly and helpful landlord.  Stu 9/10 July 2001

Another St Austells pub called the Ship Inn. St Austells have six altogether. (I am such a anorack ). The usual nautical theme of ships paintings, ships models, etc. Cosy atmosphere in a good pub.  John 8/10 Nov 98

A prettily lit pub in a seaside village. Paintings cover the walls, and photos of old Cornwall. Flowers in vases on the bar and a friendly atmosphere, especially the barman. A large model sailing ship and a sail across the ceiling enhance the nautical theme.  Sue Sept 98

This pub is nearest pub before or after you get on your ferry to the Isles of Scilly. Reminds me a little of a pub near a railway station with people stopping for a pint, before meeting someone of the boat. Pub with a fishing theme and pictures of dolphins. Good lively atmosphere.

NB On a trip to the Isles of Scilly, Sue came back from the islands by boat while Stuart and I came back by helicopter. Our flight was delay due to bad weather, but Sue got across on the boat okay. We agreed to meet at Sues hotel in Penzance the next day, but we didn't know what time. When Stuart and I eventually arrived at Sues hotel she was not there! Somehow we knew Sue would be in the Dolphin, and we were right!  John 8/10

Named because barges used to carry Scandinavian timber, for the tin mines up the river – That was before tin mining silted the river up! Ironic.  Anyway, the pub was more of a restaurant, but its improved in the last couple of years and was taken over by St Austell Brewery in the summer of 2001.  Food was rather good and the beer was fine when I visited.   Stu 7/10  Jan 2001

PERRANPORTH

Popular holiday town on the North Coast.  There is one very special pub here, right on the beach – and I mean on the beach!  One of the few places in Cornwall where you can get a donner kebab.  It was purchased from a dubious looking kiosk at the West end of town.  Well you get hungry drinking!

Bit of a rough place and the drinks are very expensive, hence no one was there. It looks tired and there was no real ale on both my visits.  There was an old red phone box in the corner- useful for calling the taxi in which you can escape. Don’t bother. Stu 2/10 Sept 2002

Tourist pub, with lots of different alcove areas. Dim-lit with fake beams.  Large beer garden and patio area at the front of the pub. London prices which might explain why the pub is empty, as well as no real ale.

Tries to compete with the Wateringhole and fails.  A silly wall blocks the view from the bars but shelters the outside seating.  It’s a typical holiday oriented pub with a separate restaurant and accommodation.  It could be so much better!  Stu 7/10 Sept 2000

Pub done out in the standard tourist decor of low beams and red carpets.  Amazingly high walls stop you having a view of the beach. Bland decor, bland atmosphere. You can't say anything for it, you can't say anything against

Location, Location, Location! This pub has location.  This is literally an oasis in the dunes.  Situated right on Perranporth Beach, to get there you walk across the sands.  There’s no road to it, mind you, neither is there any other pub like it in the <:country-region>UK.  Think of a massive bungalow with a tented front.  Loads of glass and a central semicircular bar.  8 foot high (2.4 metres in Brussles speak) paraffin burners kept us warm the evening we visited.  Live music on Saturday nights.  Brilliant idea for a pub with good beer from 2 of Cornwall’s micros.

Stu 9.5/10 Sept 2002

The walk through the wind and the rain in December was well worth the effort. Lovely pub with nice views out to the sea and the Altantic waves. Nice patio area on the outside and a cosy bar area inside. Good beer choice, only drawback was a ‘not to bright’ barmaid, who gave me a bottle of tomato ketchup when I ask for a tomato juice on a drinks round!  John 9/10 Sept 2002

A brilliant pub in the middle of the beach.   Large interior with a great atmosphere – even Chelsea F.C. on the TV which was excellent.(Sue was happy). A lovely view through the windows of the pounding surf and foul weather.  Foreign lagers Castle, Hoegarden and Bitburger.  Very nice paintings on display.  Open plan with Hawaiian style bar and tasteful X-mas decorations.  The raised seating ensures good views form everywhere.  Sue Dec 2000

The ‘Inn on the Beach’.  That’s what the locals call it.  I first visited the place in 1973 and its not changed much since then.  A fine pub offering a large selection of real ales.  A new landlord and landlady took over in December 2001 and they cater for the eater as well.  A good selection of home made food has made the pub worthy of both Egon Ronay’s and Les Routiers guides.  Inside there is wood panelling and slate on the walls.  As you enter there is the bar and to the left a large bay window overlooking St Austell bay.  Go up a few steps to a restaurant area selling good value food.  Stu 9/10 Feb 2002

A pub which has been left unchanged over the years, despite pressure to make it more touristy! Basic wooden furniture in the semi circular downstairs bar. 'Cool' blues and folk music played. This year rolls are now being
served by new management! but this is the only food available as the emphasis is very much on beer. Also ladies toilets, ( up very narrow staircase ) near by family room and upstair bar have been nicely  refurbished-which is good as they were too basic! Best way to reach the pub is by cliff walk from Looe as it is the perfect pub to finish in! Atmosphere still very good and new manager keeps beers well. Always a shame to leave!

Right at the end of the road by the quay. A marvellous pub full of character and characters!  Once you negotiate the steep and tiny steps, which lead to the front door you can just chill out.  Occasional live music; you wont find Madonna here!  Great real ale, forget food and just drink.  The previous landlords have left but still frequent the pub.  Is this Heaven?  Stu 10/10 Sept 2003

This is a lovely little fishing village on the Roseland peninsular.  The pub has a big beer garden across the road for those fine summer evenings (when?).  In the winter a coal fire heats the pub. The previous landlords cats used to get the best position in front of it.  Children and pets are all welcome here.  There are two bar areas.  A new upper bar area and a lower one by the fire.  The new landlord and landlady – Keith and Mandy Johns - have sorted this place out – great pub with excellent food and super beer! Brewery – St Austell

Real Ales – HSD, Tinners, Tribute

Food  - Good.

Turn off the A390 between Truro and St Austell.  This village pub is near the church with the tallest tower in Cornwall.  Food is good and there is a single bar area with a separate pool room.  The pub has not become a restaurant like many, and the balance between beer and grub is just right.  Friday and Saturday nights are great fun and there is a party atmosphere by late evening.  There is often live music on Saturday nights.  The beer is served in excellent condition.  Stu 8.5/10  Sept 2003/March 2004

NB.  There is the private ‘comrades club’ in the village as well.  The club sells 2 real ales, from Skinners and Sharps – cheap beer, undercutting the pub trade by at least 40p per pint served in excellent condition.  The club is for members and their guests only, although they are relaxed about this.  It was formed after the 1st World War and is always busy.  The Club is 200 yards to the East of the Pub in the main street.  Parking is at the rear.  Punters often drift between the two drinking establishments during the evening.

Cosy village pub, with a dimly lit bar area. Nice decor with stone walls, beams and fishing artefacts. Good relaxing atmosphere. Friendly landlord who serve a good pint.   John 8/10 Nov 98 /March 2004

A pretty pub with brasses on display and textured stone walls and an open log fireplace. Rather subdued peach coloured lights. Also fishing rods and tackle. Grange walls. Friendly local pub.  Sue Sept 98
