PUB LIST - ISLES OF SCILLY

No guide of Cornwall would be complete without mentioning the Isles of Scilly.  Located 28 miles to the South West of Lands End, it shares its spirit with Cornwall.  Although, much more like Cornwall in the 1960’s, it is remote.  You can’t drive there!  Go by Helicopter from the Heliport in Penzance, or by boat (sells keg beer in the bar) from Penzance docks or by Plane from St Just airfield.  You will not regret it, as it has a great selection of pubs!

The Atlantic inn is a super pub.  People don’t have to try hard to enjoy themselves here.  At the rear is a large restaurant overlooking and overhanging the harbour.  Next door is a super hotel with 23 rooms.  George the owner is an ex BBC commentator who gives guided tours around the islands.       Stu 8/10  May 1998

Lovely pub by the harbour side, dimly lit pub with a cosy atmosphere. The back of the pub has some nice harbour views which is where most people like to sit, there is more seating at the front.  Nice food in dining area.

John 9/10

Although I disapprove of the no smoking policy in the dining area, at least there is a separate food area, which means service is swift for food and beer. Attractive lighting in red and green ships lights and low beams. Also a veranda area looking onto the harbour. Friendly and helpful landlord.  Sue

Boisterous atmosphere in the evening and full of locals and a few from another planet.  Stone walls and a friendly welcome.  Super pub for the keen drinker. Stu 8/10 May 1998.

This pub is more down to earth and lively than the Atlantic Inn. Some nice alcoves areas with decor and artefacts above average for A St Austells pub.  John 8/10

A cheerful pub near the centre of Hugh Town. Nice wood bar area and balcony area. Ships painting in capstan and memorabilia on the  walls. The real ale Hicks was excellent. Liked lamps, which were a pretty green and orange. Friendly bar service. Pub subsequently invaded by the slap heads 'Scilly Isles tour' group singing out of tune (and words).  Sue

Food orientated but pleasant pub by Porthcressa beach.  Stu 7/10 May 1998.

Pub next to a nightclub, which is more into food than drink. Bland atmosphere, but nice view out to the beach from the windows. Its like the owners don't know what direction to take the pub. John 7/10 May 1998

Recently built pub giving the residents on the other side of the island a pub of their own. While a new pub it already has a lived in atmosphere too it. Nice pint of London Pride. Separate dining and drinking areas.  John 8.5/10

A recent edition to the island’s pubs’ it has kept up the high standard.  Built in 1993 ish, it’s a couple of miles from Hugh town but worth the walk and there’s a free taxi back.  Just ask at the bar.  Large bar and pool table as you walk in.  Go through to an even bigger dining room, which serves excellent food. Stu 8/10 May 1998.

NB.  St Marys golf course club house bar has a selection of Malt Whiskies.

First pub you see as you come off the ferry.  Impressive pub sign outside the pub, inside is a nautical theme as you except from the pubs name . Lots of wood panelling.  John 7.5/10

Right by the Quay , ideal for the fishermen.  Nets and fishing bits all over the place.  Very lively atmosphere!

Take a walk up to the Garrison and visit this hotel. This hotel is expensive but very, very nice.  In the dungeon is a bar, which serves real ale and has a great collection of single malt whiskies.  During the summer there is a Liverpudlian who makes a pilgrimage here to work.  And who could blame him?  In the bar are photographs of celebrities who have stayed in the hotel.  Stu 8/10 May 1998

Much better than your average hotel bar, the whitewall cellar bar creates a lot of atmosphere and is a nice place to cool off in the summer. The ales are usually well kept. John 8/10 May 1998.

Wow!  This is island paradise.  After a rough crossing on a tiny boat from St Marys, the welcoming slipway is right by the pub.  We have spent many happy hours here!  If you can leave the pub, the island is worth walking around.  At low tide you can cross to the island of Gugh (pronounced Goo).  Stu 8/10 May 1998

You can't miss this pub when you come off the boat from St Marys. Pub is in a wonderful setting, cosy and relaxing atmosphere, with some nice wooden beams. A nice place to unwind after a boat trip.

Real Ales – None during our last visit

Food  - Good Menu

No real ales available during our visit.  It reminds me of a World War 2 drill hall.  No Vera Lynn, but a friendly place serving simple food and keg beers and stout.  There is outside seating for nice days.  Prince Charles owns the nearby St Martins Hotel, built by the quay.   Stu 5/10  May 1998

NB.  At the other end of the island there was a private house selling real ale.

I agreed with Stuart about the World War Two drill hall, you half expect the cast of Dads Army to appear!
I am not sure how to feel about this place.  John 6/10 May 1998

To reach the island you normally go by boat from St Marys, but if your rich then go by helicopter; just a 10 min journey from St Marys.  The island must have the smallest terminal building in the U.K.  The pub is beside the ‘main road’, if such a thing exists here.  First visit the lovely gardens at Tresco Abbey (Sue) and then go and spend lunchtime in the pub.  It’s a great watering hole and it has accommodation to boot!  There is a big out door area for drinking, sunbathing and sleeping.  Inside it is surprisingly large.       Stu 8/10 May 1998

NB.  If you want to impress a non-drinker, visit the island hotel for cream teas’.
