This pub is very much centred on the tourist.  Right by Harlyn beach, there is a surf shop around the front.  The pub is at the rear by the large car park.  One large bar mainly for food and drink with a smaller second.  Does carverys on a Sunday.        Stu 7/10  Oct 2001

Nice little pub with parking out front.  Again in the main road through the town.  Stu 6/10

A little like the previous pub ( Cornubia ), but with more wood panelling.  Friendly service from good bar staff. Locals also were very friendly. John 7/10

Attractive exterior to pub on main road in Hayle. Dark wood interior with wood dividers between areas. A little dimly lit, maybe. Interesting photos of demolition of local power station! A good locals pub..  Sue Sept 1996

Large pub with accommodation.  In the main street and it could be easily overlooked.  Looks past its best though. Stu 7/10

Large pub on the main road not many people in when we visited, but the atmosphere was good. Lots of separate places to sit. Pictures of old Hayle on the wall were interesting.  John 7/10

Large pub near central shops with red furnishings. Light and airy with a pretty beer patio in the backyard. Pleasant landlord. Pictures of old Hayle on the wall. Separated into various rooms.  Sue Sept 1996

Nothing special here.  We almost missed the train to St Ives.  Don’t know why as there was nothing to keep us!

A small pub by the railway viaduct and near the railway station. A very lackluste pub, it did nothing for me.Trys to add to the atmosphere by having the 1 PM news on loud!  John 5/10

A pleasant pub, but more of a locals pub with a large games room, fruit machine and a loud TV in the middle of the Bar. Unimpressive tables and decor. Some nice photos on the wall but not really my kind of pub.

Fine brewpub located at a bird sanctuary/zoo.  Once in Hayle, turn off the old A30 at the big railway viaduct at the West end of town and follow the signs to Bird Paradise.  Good beers have been produced here since the early 80’s.  The brewery is in the adjoining block adjacent to the outdoor seating area.  Largish pub serves up to 3 of its own beers.   Stu – 9/10 Sept 2000

What a setting!  Beside Helford river and set in a ‘tropical’ paradise.  Drive to the National Trust car park and take a walk to the village.  The 17th century thatched building can often get packed in the Summer.  Outside is a sloping patio area overlooking the creek.   Stu – 8.5/10  April 1995

An incredibly difficult pub to get to and once you get there, even harder to park! However, the pub is extremely pretty, set near the mouth of a creek, on which Daphne du Maurier based Frenchmans creek. Decorated with nets, casks and boats rigging. Comfortable furniture and outside seating as well. Also old log fireplace.

Sue Sept 97

Lovely old pub in nice river setting. Finding a car parking space is on a par with central London! I think I parked on some yellow lines ( thinking I’ll be unlucky to find a traffic warden in the middle of nowhere ). Nice old fireplace, with nets and seafaring artefacts which really adds to the atmosphere of the place. Stuart says this use to suffer from under age drinking, I 'am not sure how they got down to the pub (or Parked ) did there mums and dads drive them there? (They drove themselves!)

This pub has improved in recent years and underage drinking is no longer visible.  The pub is right next to its own stretch of beach on the Helford River.  Park at the car park on the hill above it.  If you drive down to it you will generally have to turn around and retreat.  Outdoor seating area facing the river at the front of the pub.  Inside the pub is large and there is a separate dining area.  The food is good and so is the beer.  Accommodation is also available here.  Stu – 8/10 1999

Big hotel bar with a pool room at the front.  At the back is a long bar with a well beside it!  Look down to the water 50 feet below.  At the rear is a restaurant.  A very old and interesting building – see the ancient passage on the way to the toilets.           Stu   -  7/10   Feb 2002

Average pub with some average decor, but has one or two interesting features including a Well next to the bar with a glass top over it and a street lamp with the pub name on it. Separate dining rooms and pool area, in need of refurbishment.  John 6/10 visit Feb 2002

Located in the main shopping street next to the Rodney.  Fairly typical interior with red Guinness carpet plus harps.  TV screen in the rear seating area.      Stu   -  7/10   Feb 2002

Nice cosy pub with slate walls, red carpet and fake beams. There a pool table on one side of the bar. The rare Ring O' Bells brewery - Bodmin Boar was reasonably priced at £1-60. A good locals place.

The bar is the heart of any pub.

Picture taken from the rear bar where

John and Stu are relaxing - just out of picture!

Unpretentious brewpub which has been brewing excellent, but strong Spingo beers for century’s.  Drinking bars off to the right,  brewery halfway down on the left and skittles alley at the back.  After two pints of Spingo you won’t find too much wrong with the world. A personal favourite with genuine old outside loo’s!   John 11 out of 10. Feb 2002/March 2004

Blue Anchor memories:-

1  Ex brewer Syd Cannon coming down to the bar in his nightgown. When someone offered to buy him a drink.

2  A  American tourist going around the pub with his video camera, before a brewery tour telling everyone this must be beer heaven.

3  We met a local character called Yorkie with a very reddish face. We got a picture of him, the picture came back from Boots with one of those stickers saying you need to adjust your camera. We did not have the heart to go back and say it was a natural photo.

4  Best Review for the Blue Anchor goes to David Guthie in his book ,the complete guide to  Cornish pubs, when he says "no Concessions to part time drinkers"

Now you MUST visit this place!  Unchanged since our last visit in Sept 2000.  It’s ‘Beer heaven’ because the beers are superb.  The brewery is up the side steps in the alley, ask nicely and you might get a tour.  The front bar gets busy whilst the rear one is occupied by locals, who seem to be fixtures.   Old wood seats and ancient notices telling of public hanging – apparently someone stole a sheep!  They take farming seriously here.           Stu - Great Pub! When visiting Helston we normally make a ‘b-line’ for the Blue Anchor, so the other pubs are missed out.  However this is a reasonable pub with comfy chairs in the middle section.  Easy to fall asleep here.  The end section houses a restaurant area with nice brewery mirrors on the wall.         Stu   -  6/10   Sept 2000

A dining area off to the left as you go in, separate section with pool table and a small section with some nice easy chairs.  Some impressive St Austell’s brewery mirrors which seen to have advertised most of the brews they do.  John  7/10  Sept 2000

A pretty panelled-wood bar and an extremely comfortable sofa gave this pub a friendly ambience. A little too food orientated maybe as most tables already laid for eating.  Sue Sept 2000

A beautiful country pub set on a river with tables outside and a water mill.  Inside decoration was dark wood beams and flowers on the tables which disgusted John!  Public bar also very nice and sunlit.  A lovely pub but not quite a 10.               Sue April 1996

Pub in the centre of the village, with lots of tables for drinking outside in the summer.  A good locals public bar , also there is large dining room serving good food.  Pleasant decor and a good atmosphere. I am always seen to visit this pub on a warm summers evening.  John 8.5/10

Used to be a regular favourite with Camra.  I like it and had my first expedition there in 1978 when there were few real ale outlets anywhere!  It’s changed a bit since then but still worth a visit. Stu 8/10
