FALMOUTH

A boisterous town at the mouth of the river Fal.  The deep natural harbour has attracted seafarers for 2000 years.  The town is a little worse for wear and the main street is a bit of an obstacle course – a case of dodge the car!  However there are some great pubs here.

Good pub which is on two levels, the bar is in the upstairs part of the pub.  Good views over the harbour. The decor is a shipping theme, with flags, masks and model ships. As well as beer mats on the ceiling! Different pub with a good feel to it.  John 8.5/10 Sept 2002

Nice pub built in the 1930’s as a private house set in large grounds.  The grounds have become a housing estate! A smallish front bar with a large restaurant area to the left and family room to the right.  To the rear is a further darts bar and a separate pool room with 2 tables.  The beer is good and so is the food.  Notice the original wood panelling in the bar and staircase. New landlord arrived in 2007 who dispenses fine real ales.

As you drive into Falmouth on the A39 the Pub is on the left before you turn left into the town at the traffic lights.  This is a big isolated pub, a bit like someone’s bungalow - and it was! Specialising in food in on bar and drinking in the other.  A large conservatory was added in the 90’s.  Stu 7.5/10 1997.

Large pub in even larger grounds. So large there’s a St Austell’s distribution depot next to the pub. Pub away from the town centre in an ‘under pubbed’ part of Falmouth.’Upmarket decor and nice conservatory,’maybe going a little more towards food than drink.  John 8/10 Aug 96

Large waterside pub in the main shopping street with lovely views over the harbour from the inside.  There is a small front seating area and large rear bar with a pool table.  It can get very busy Friday and Saturday nights as it is opposite a nightclub.  A good sign when the barman topped up an undersize pint which a dizzy barmaid dispensed.  Stu 7.5/10 Feb 2002.

Its changed a lot since the early nineties when it had the feeling of a 1950’s pub.  Being ‘done up’ during my last visit and now has 2 pool rooms and 2 bars plus a beer garden.  Friendly service with locals popping up the bar.  The pub sign was missing but its probably being repainted the first time since the war.  Altogether a good locals pub but beware the climb up the 100 steps of Jacobs Ladder to get there.

Stuart 8/10 Sept 2003

A good idea having a pub at the end of the ladder, after climbing the steps you need a drink! Pub seems to be in mid-decorated. At the front are some film director style chairs with the pubs name on it. At the back are two
pool tables, and some paintings on the wall. Friendly bar staff and locals.  John 7/10 visit Sept 2003

Very different St Austells pub.  Live music - because we were doing the St Austells passport we didn't have to pay to get in. First people in, listen to a drummer doing his drum rolls (badly ). If you sit by the window you can see out to the harbour (and the docks ). John 7/10 Aug 96

An unusual St Austell pub - a live music venue. Very large pub with ships timber tables and lovely chalk cartoons above the bar and on the walls. Overlooks the end of the harbour and the beginning of the docks. Friendly young bar staff who originally tried to change admission, but were fine when we said we were only here for the beer! Long panelled wood bar and ships timbers pillars. Altogether very different from the other pubs we have been in.  Sue Sept 1997

The best pub in Falmouth.   The excellent range of real ales is constantly changing.  This pub; as its name suggests, is right by the water, off the main shopping street.  There used to be free peanuts in the cosy wood floored downstairs bar.  Upstairs are the toilets and a lounge bar.  You can sit outside and enjoy the view if the weathers fine. Stu 8/10 Sept 2002.

A pub with two bars, I think we went into the front bar. Done out in the style of the Ale House In Truro, but a lot more comfortable and better. A good pub. The thing I most like about this pub, is there section of malt whisky. There are so many (150 ) they put them into a menu, because the punters and the staff have trouble with the scottish names, (ie  Lagavulin is pronounced 'lagga-voolin ) they do them by numbers. So its a little like ordering a Chinese takeaway.  I'll have a number 27 please!  John 9/10 Sept 2002

Low beamed pub with a cosy atmosphere, and some nice views over the harbour.  Great paintings on the wall of the locals, and a big teapot collection ( yes teapots )  all add to the character of pubs. When I went here my impression were that some of the bar staff were inexperienced.  The continued to chat amongst themselves whilst I waited patiently for a drink. The word ‘vacant’ springs to mind for one lass, who was  eager to ring up the total on the till before I had finished ordering.  The food was ok except they forgot to heat it up so the curry had a skin on the top like custard !  The steaks were tough.  Not up to the normal standards of this chain.  However, the beer was good.  The new pub is on the site of an market which is no more.  The bowed front  reminds me of a ship.  Done in typicall J.D. style but not as good as the Penzance one. A big bar upstairs as well as a ground floor bar with a children’s and no smoking area.  However, as the no smoking area was away from the kiddies section the children are able to smoke.  Stu 7.0/10 Sept 2003.

After waiting years for a Wetherspoons pub in Cornwall, you suddenly get three come along all at once!  ( The other two are in Newquay and Penzance ). Modern designed pub on two floors with red carpet, wood panelling and marble tables. Good choice of beers and prices. Small beer garden at the back. John 8.5/10 visit Sept 2003

This is one of around 100 establishments on the Camra National Inventory of Historic Pub Interiors and the only one in Cornwall.  It began trading in 1660 and the same family have owned it since 1873.  The Reverend Barrington runs the place and it has been unchanged since 1947 when an internal wall was taken down by his father, which separated a smoking room from the main bar.  The smoking room must have been something, although it would now have a government health warning stamped on it! In fact the wallpaper was even trying to part company from the walls !  This place is purely for drinkers who can sit in the timber clad narrow front bar.  Outside there is plenty of seating on the renovated sidewalk.

Stu 8.5/10 Sept 2002.

Basic pub much loved by Camra, but it does not do much for me. Small basic local front bar, with the beer coming straight from the barrel. Back bar in orange and white decor. Average pub in the centre of town.

Fowey’s most famous pub.  John Carter was a local smuggler in the 18th Century.  When he was a boy he nicknamed himself the ‘King of Prussia’ and this is who the pub is named after – not the actual King! It’s a very interesting pub architecturally.  Stone pillars support the upstairs bar which is accessed by an outside staircase. However, once inside it somehow appears less historic.  Reasonable beer and food.  Stu 7/10 1996

This pub is in a good location overlooking the harbour. Outside it looks okay, but inside it seems a little dead. There is something missing here, but I can't put my finger on what it is.  John 7/10 1996

Wow!  What a find.  It became a free house in early January 2001.  Most people would never come this way, but then you would miss a great Cornish Pub.  The beers were served in excellent condition and the Ham, egg and Chips were ‘purfect’!  The Landord and Landlady; Tony and Barbara Martin have been here since 1982 and have transformed this ex Greenhalls/Devears pub.  Two bars and a pool room.  Gentlemen can savour the photos in the loo. By the way, Frogpool is named after a pool full of frogs (NO!), which existed here in the 1830’s.  Unfortunately a group of modern bungalows have taken their place.  Stu 9/10  Jan 01
